Rumors are pointing towards a possible “Remake” of “Red Dead Redemption” using the Unreal Engine.

Rockstar Games, known for creating successful series such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, is allegedly working on a remaster of the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption, and all signs indicate the use of the Unreal Engine. This possibility came to light from a recent job posting on the official Rockstar Games website.

Red Dead Redemption was originally released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, set in the year 1911 during the final years of the American frontier, a time when outlaws and lawmen fought for control of the West. The story follows the journey of John Marston, a former outlaw whose wife and son are held hostage by government authorities to force him to kill his former gang members.

The game is a sequel to Red Dead Revolver, released in 2004, but the connection between Revolver and Redemption 1 and 2 is tenuous. Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, is a prequel to the first game.

Evidence of a remaster of Red Dead Redemption has been piling up, especially with the recent update to the Rockstar Games website, which includes a new logo for the game. Now, a new job listing at Rockstar’s San Diego office has further fueled speculation. The vacancy is for an Open World Event Designer, and what stands out is the requirement for experience with the Unreal Engine.

Rockstar Games is likely using a proprietary engine for the development of Grand Theft Auto 6, which leaves room for the possibility that the search for someone with Unreal Engine experience is for the alleged remake/remaster of Red Dead Redemption. The developer has used its custom engine, the RAGE Engine, in nearly all of its games since Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis in 2006. However, the definitive edition of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy released in 2021 used Unreal Engine 4 and was outsourced to Grove Street Games, a studio specialized in mobile adaptations of console and PC games.

It is too early to say for certain why Rockstar Games is seeking an open world designer with experience in the Unreal Engine. While many studios use proprietary engines to develop their games, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the only software used in the development process of a specific game. However, considering the growing number of rumors, it is not impossible that Rockstar Games is considering using the Unreal Engine to bring Red Dead Redemption back into the spotlight.
