While everyone in the gaming community awaits an update on Grand Theft Auto (GTA 6), Rockstar Games surprised fans by announcing the acquisition of Cfx.re, the developers behind the FiveM client mod for Grand Theft Auto 5. Rockstar Games‘ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, hasn’t had a very smooth relationship with modders in the past, so no one was really expecting this move.

Acquisition of FiveM Developers: Impact on the Future of GTA 6 RP

Exactly how Cfx.re will contribute to the current game or future projects is not clear at the moment, but fans have already started to speculate.

On August 11, 2023, Rockstar Games announced that it had acquired the developers of the Grand Theft Auto 5 roleplay (RP) client mod, FiveM, Cfx.re. Since then, fans have been speculating about the role of Cfx.re in Rockstar Games‘ titles.

This acquisition is of great importance for Grand Theft Auto 5 and likely for its highly anticipated sequel, Grand Theft Auto 6, as well. Twitter user @that1detectiv3 presented their thoughts on how this could impact the online mode of the upcoming game.

Although an online mode for Grand Theft Auto 6 hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s highly likely to have one, given the success of Grand Theft Auto Online. As mentioned by @that1detectiv3, the budget and resources of Rockstar Games, combined with Cfx.re’s experience in RP servers, could result in an unprecedented multiplayer experience.

GTA RP and Its Popularity

The RP servers of Grand Theft Auto 5 are popular not only for community interaction but also because some of them include modified maps and assets. If this feature is officially integrated into the sequel, we might see something similar to a map editor, quite akin to those featured in many Far Cry titles.

However, it should be noted that how the developers of the best GTA RP servers will be utilized by Rockstar Games has not been revealed yet. The gaming industry giant mentioned in their Roleplay Community Update blog that they expanded their mod policy to support community efforts.

Therefore, there’s a good chance that Cfx.re has been acquired solely to enhance the overall RP experience on existing servers, without having anything to do with Grand Theft Auto 6.

GTA 6 Release Date

These questions will remain unanswered until confirmed by Rockstar Games or until the next game in the series is released. While a concrete answer about its release window isn’t available at the moment, Take-Two’s latest earnings call provided hints of a possible GTA 6 release date.
